I have lived here for several years and it is a very easy place to live. Economy is good, weather is generally lovely (assuming you like it sunny and warm). Summer sucks but you learn to deal with it. Price of living is expensive - make sure your housing is included as part of any contract (seriously -- it's more pricey here than NYC and Tokyo). As long as you're comfortable with terms of your contract, go for it. Traffic here sucks. More road accidents and deaths here per capita than almost anywhere else in the world. Really. You need to be an assertive/aggressive driver here if you expect to survive and not wither away like some frail flower. Qatar still issues visas under sponsorship. Basically this means that whoever you work for has control over you. So to leave the country -- a weekend trip someplace -- requires you to get your employer's permission and signature on a paper at least 24 hours in advance of your trip. Kind of a drag, but if you work for a western employer it's usually only a minor annoyance. But it gets frustrating that you need their permission for so much here -- to get a liquor license, to hire a housemaid, buy a car, etc. Qatar is nice, centrally located -- a great place to travel to other places from (Europe, Asia, and Africa are all about a 5 hour flight away). If you're a guy, it can be rather hard to find single women to meet. Loads of Asian ladies looking for sugar daddies...but otherwise, there's about 1 single woman for every 10 single men here. Not great odds if you're a guy... There is a website called QatarLiving -- loads of info on life here, you can post questions, read what other people say... Good luck with your decision!
